When B&P (then known as Baker Perkins) designed and introduced the
world's first Dual Planetary Vertical Mixer in 1958 we knew we were on to something. We
already had decades of experience with our sigma blade design, but the dual planetary
design changed everything. Since then, we've placed hundreds of units in the field
throughout the propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics industry. Our machines have
performed with exemplary safety records and unparalleled reliability. In fact, that first
machine produced in 1958 is still in service here in the United States.
The keys to this
mixer's success are design and engineering. Our dual planetary design is truly planetary.
Both blades on the mixer are located off-center and follow a precise orbit around the
center of the machine. Though a real challenge to produce from an engineering and
manufacturing standpoint, it is the superior design. Dual planetary action eliminates the
dead spot beneath the blade centers, more efficiently distributes ingredients and has
better thermal mixing effects.
Also, our exclusive patented "hunting
tooth", which offsets the blade rotation path by a very small increment for each full
planetation of the blades, dramatically increases the number of close points of the outer
blade to the mix bowl. The blades tend to fully wipe the bowl bottom and wall, enhancing
mixing efficiency and reducing bowl wall film.
Performance reliability is enhanced by select components and materials of construction.
Blades and all wetted components are constructed according to ASME standards for
materials, procedures and welding. Blades are dye-penetrant inspected and polished to a
smooth finish.
Gears, bearings, housings, shafts and other drive train components are designed for
robust horsepower environments. Gears are constructed to AGMA requirements, and we've
never had a catastrophic failure in the nearly 50 years we've been making them. B&P
bearings are designed with a B-10 life of 30,000 hours.
The same superior design and mixing excellence is found in the B&P
Laboratory Size Vertical Mixers. Our reliable mixers are designed for laboratory testing
where mixing quality as well as accurate and consistent scale up to larger batches is
mandatory. The laboratory size mixers are offered in sizes from 1/4 pint to 5 gallons, incorporating many of the same features found on larger mixers to ensure safe and thorough mixing.
